Call for Papers

It is important to investigate how and why some societies become more prone to populism whereas others could resist. This involves an understanding of the social and individual dimensions of populism and its interface. Towards this end, the present section of the handbook attempts to bring together narratives from across the world about the interface between social and individual dimensions of populism and their implications. For this conference, topics related to the following are welcome but are not limited to:

Dr. L T Om Prakash

Section Editor of 'Society, Reflexivity and Populism' in the Encyclopaedia

Dr. L T Om Prakash is an Associate Professor of Sociology at CHRIST University, India. He has 12 years of teaching and research experience in the field of Sociology. His areas of research interest include Social Stratification, Sociology of Education and Ritual Studies. He has published widely in academic journals, online magazines and dailies. Having begun his carrier as a research associate, his expertise in data analysis and interpretation techniques is an added advantage. He has recently completed a research project sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi and is currently pursuing another major research project funded internally. He has participated/presented papers in many conferences/seminars of national/international significance.

Dr. Susanne Nef is a Lecturer and Project Leader at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences, Switzerland. She received her Ph.D. summa cum laude in Educational Sciences from University of Zurich, Switzerland.

Interest: Ontology, Social phenomenology, and philosophical anthropology.

Dr. Kaustuv Roy is a University Professor of Educational Philosophy and Sociology at Thapar School of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Thapar University. Previously, he was faculty member at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, USA. Dr. Roy earned his Ph.D from Michigan State University, USA.

Interest: Urban Sociology, Industrial Sociology and Research Methodology

Dr. N. Chandrasiri Niriella is a Professor in Urban Sociology (Personal Chair), at the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Professor Niriella did his postgraduate work at several national and international institutions earning his M.Phil. in Social Sciences from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai (2004), a PhD in Social Sciences from Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi (2010), and a Postgraduate Diploma in Urban Management and Development Theories from Erasmus University, the Netherlands (2018).

Interest: Populism, Public Health, Medical Sociology & Social Inequalities

Dr. Susan Lee is a Postdoctoral researcher in the Medical Sociology Department at the University of Cologne, Germany. She holds a Ph.D in Sociology from the University of Cologne, a Masters degree in Sociology, a BA in Sociology and a BA in Psychology from Lehigh University, USA.

Interest: Electoral Politics, Police and Human Rights, Public Administration and Policy Studies.

Dr. Chaitanya Pradeep serves as Assistant Professor of Political Science, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Bangalore, India. He served as a Senior Research Associate at Centre for Human Rights, University of Hyderabad. He is a BPRD certified police researcher and a past Research Fellow of Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD, Union Ministry of Home Affairs, New Delhi). He holds a Ph.D. and M.Phil. from the University of Hyderabad, a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Andhra University.

Interest: Tamil modernity and body imaging

Dr. Abilash Chandran is a bi-lingual author who writes academic articles and books in English and creative works in Tamil (an Indian regional language). He teaches English in Christ (Deemed to be University), Bangalore, India. He earned his Masters in English Literature from Madras Christian College, Chennai, India. He earned a PhD degree in Tamil modernity and body imaging from University of Madras, Chennai, India.

Interest: Sociology in media, health communication and gender studies

Dr. Sudhansubala Sahu is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at CHRIST (Deemed to be University) India. She earned her Ph.D. degree in Sociology from The Central University of Hyderabad, India. She also completed her Master and MPhil in Sociology from Central University of Hyderabad, India. She has a Bachelor’s of Sociology from Ravenshaw College, Cuttack, Odisha.

Interest: Indigenous communities, Ecology, Sociology of Health, Sociology of Development and Corporate Social Responsibility

Dr. Maya M is an assistant professor of Sociology at CHRIST (Deemed to be Univeristy) Bangalore India who writes in both English and Malayalam (an Indian regional language). She earned her Master’s degree and PhD from Loyola College of Social Sciences, University of Kerala, India.

Interest: People's sentiments/Mass sentiments

Dr. Suparna Majumdar Kar is an Associate Professor of Sociology at CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Bangalore, India. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from CHRIST, and MPhil and Masters from the Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University. She is part of the Department of Sociology and Social Work and the Teaching Learning Enhancement Cell at the University. She has worked on the return migration of IT professionals to Bangalore and is currently working on the field of Migration and Diaspora Studies.

Interest: Journalism

Dr. Rajesh Aruchamy is an Assistant Professor of Media Studies, School of Arts and Humanities, CHRIST (Deemed to be University). He holds a PhD in Educational Technology from Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, India and an MA in Communication and Journalism from PSG College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore, India. He is the principal investigator for a major research project funded by Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) on the title Social Media and New-Wave Regionalism in Tamil Nadu: A Case Study of Jallikattu, Anti- NEET and Central Projects.

Dr. Rajeev K is an assistant professor at the Department of Sociology & Social Work at the School of Social Sciences, Christ University, Benagluru. He has a Ph.D. from Manipal University and contributes to journals such as the Journal of Social Work Education and Practise, Summerhill IIAS Review, Journal of Educational Planning & Administration among others. He has contributed to periodicals such as Deccan Herald, dailyO and Keraleeyam.

Prof. Padmakumar having completed his Masters in Philosophy from Annamalai University is currently pursuing his doctorate from CHRIST (Deemed to be University). He has published in journals such as the International Journal of Research And Analytical Reviews, Artha Journal of Social Science, Journal of Dharma to name a few. He has also written for periodicals such as Deccan Herald (DH), DH-Education as well as The Hindu.
